How to Add a WhatsApp Button to Your Website
The easiest and most correct way to add a WhatsApp button to your website so visitors can reach you with a single click.
Adding a WhatsApp button to your website is one of the most practical ways to communicate with visitors instantly. Instead of sharing your phone number directly, a button that opens a WhatsApp conversation with a single click improves user experience and increases conversion rates.
What is the wa.me Link?
WhatsApp provides wa.me as its official redirect service. The format is:
https://wa.me/<phone_number>
You need to write the phone number including the country code, without a leading + or 0. Example for the US:
https://wa.me/12125551234
A pre-filled message can also be added:
https://wa.me/12125551234?text=Hello%2C%20I%20would%20like%20to%20get%20information.
Basic HTML Button
The simplest form of a WhatsApp button:
<a href="https://wa.me/12125551234" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
Chat on WhatsApp
</a>
target="_blank" opens it in a new tab, and rel="noopener noreferrer" is recommended for security.
Styled Button (HTML + CSS)
A green-colored button matching the WhatsApp brand:
<a href="https://wa.me/12125551234"
target="_blank"
rel="noopener noreferrer"
class="whatsapp-btn">
<svg width="20" height="20" fill="currentColor" viewBox="0 0 24 24">

Fixed Floating Button (Corner)
A corner button that remains visible as the visitor scrolls:
<a href="https://wa.me/12125551234"
target="_blank"
rel="noopener noreferrer"
class="whatsapp-float"
title="Contact via WhatsApp">
<svg width="28" height="28" fill="currentColor" viewBox="0 0 24 24">
<!-- same SVG path as above -->
</svg>
</a>
.whatsapp-float {
position: fixed;
bottom: 24px;
right: 24px;
width: 56px;
height: 56px;
background: #25D366;
color: #fff;
border-radius: 50%;
display: flex;
align-items: center;
justify-content: center;
box-shadow: 0 4px 16px rgba(37, 211, 102, 0.45);
z-index: 999;
transition: transform 0.2s, box-shadow 0.2s;
}
.whatsapp-float:hover {
transform: scale(1.1);
box-shadow: 0 6px 24px rgba(37, 211, 102, 0.6);
}
Important Notes
Phone number format: Do not add +, 00 or 0 at the beginning of the number in the wa.me link. Write country code + number directly: 12125551234
Pre-filled message: Don’t forget to URL-encode special characters in the ?text= parameter. Use %20 for spaces, %2C for commas. A safer approach is to use JavaScript’s encodeURIComponent():
const phone = '12125551234';
const message = 'Hello, I would like to get information.';
const url = `https://wa.me/${phone}?text=${encodeURIComponent(message)}`;
Mobile vs desktop: The wa.me link opens the WhatsApp app on mobile devices and WhatsApp Web on desktop. No extra configuration needed.
WhatsApp Business: If you use WhatsApp Business instead of personal WhatsApp, the same wa.me link works. The number doesn’t change.
How I Implemented It on My Site
On this site, I use WhatsApp buttons both in the Hero section buttons and at the bottom of the contact page. Since I generate a static site with Astro.js, the buttons render directly as HTML without needing any JS library.
For the button design, I used WhatsApp’s brand color #25D366 by overriding the border-color and color inline styles on the btn-outline CSS class.
